RONALDO NAZÁRIO

From his breakthrough in Brazil to World Cup glory and spells with some of Europe's biggest clubs, Ronaldo Nazário built one of the most recognisable careers of his generation.

After starting his senior career with Cruzeiro, he moved to PSV Eindhoven as a teenager before going on to represent Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan in Europe. He later returned to Brazil with Corinthians, where he finished his playing career.

This is the story of Ronaldo's career through the clubs, tournaments and shirts that defined it.

The Beginning

Ronaldo began his senior career with Cruzeiro in Brazil before moving to PSV Eindhoven at the age of 17.

His two seasons in the Netherlands established him as one of the most exciting young forwards in European football. Real Madrid's official history records 52 goals in 56 games during his time at PSV before Barcelona signed him in 1996.

The PSV period marks the beginning of Ronaldo's European career, before the moves to Barcelona and Inter Milan that would turn him into a global star.

Barcelona

Ronaldo joined Barcelona from PSV in 1996 and spent just one season at the club.

Barcelona's official records credit him with 47 goals in 51 appearances, while the club also won the Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup during the 1996/97 season.

One of the most famous moments of that season came against Compostela in October 1996, when Ronaldo collected the ball inside his own half, drove through several challenges and scored.

Despite staying for only one season, his Barcelona period remains one of the most statistically prolific spells of his career.

Inter Milan

Ronaldo joined Inter Milan from Barcelona in the summer of 1997.

During his first season in Italy, he helped Inter win the 1997/98 UEFA Cup and scored in the final against Lazio. Across his Inter career, the club records 59 goals in 99 appearances.

It was during this period that Ronaldo became widely known as O Fenômeno — The Phenomenon — a nickname that remains closely associated with him.

His time in Milan was also heavily disrupted by serious injuries, but the late-1990s Inter shirts remain closely associated with one of the defining periods of his career.

Real Madrid

After winning the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, Ronaldo joined Real Madrid.

Across his Real Madrid career, the club records 177 official appearances and 104 goals.

During his time in Madrid he won two La Liga titles, the Intercontinental Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.

Ronaldo was also La Liga's top scorer in the 2003/04 season.

His spell at Madrid placed him alongside many of the other major names associated with the club's Galácticos era.

 1994–2006

Brazil

Ronaldo was part of Brazil's World Cup-winning squad in 1994, although he did not play during the tournament.

He later became a central figure for Brazil at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

In 2002, after recovering from major injury problems, Ronaldo scored eight goals at the World Cup, including both goals in Brazil's 2–0 victory over Germany in the final.

Ronaldo finished his World Cup career with 15 goals, which was the tournament record until Miroslav Klose surpassed it in 2014.

The yellow Brazil number 9 shirt from the 2002 tournament became one of the defining images of Ronaldo's international career.

The Later Years

Ronaldo left Real Madrid in 2007 and joined AC Milan.

After his time in Italy, he returned to Brazil with Corinthians. AC Milan and Corinthians were the final two clubs of his professional career before he announced his retirement on 14 February 2011.

By the end of his career, Ronaldo had won two Ballon d'Or awards, in 1997 and 2002, as well as two World Cups with Brazil.

THE PHENOMENON

Legacy

Ronaldo Nazário's career cannot be defined by one club, one shirt or even one World Cup. At PSV he announced himself in Europe; at Barcelona and Inter Milan, his explosive acceleration, close control and finishing made him one of football's most formidable forwards. He later became a defining name of Real Madrid's Galácticos era.

Injuries changed the course of his career, but his return to lead Brazil to the 2002 World Cup title became one of football's great comeback stories. Two Ballon d'Or awards and the Golden Boot at that tournament reflect only part of his influence on the game.

For collectors and supporters, the shirts tell that story in their own way: Barcelona's red and blue, Inter's black and blue stripes, the white of Real Madrid and Brazil's yellow number nine. Each belongs to a different chapter, but together they trace the career of a player remembered as O Fenômeno.
