In a career emerging from modest beginnings in Portugal to instantaneous impact in some of the greatest teams in the best leagues in the world, capped by sustained domination in Europe’s biggest competition, Cristiano Ronaldo is a player whose name is synonymous with success. Initially an exciting and eccentric out-and-out winger, he honed his craft and transitioned to a more free-roaming and consequently effective wide forward before cementing himself as a left-sided inside-forward. In his later years, a testament to his continued adaptability, CR7 transitioned into occupying a more central role becoming one of the world’s best strikers. This article takes a look at the storied career (and the shirts that accompanied him along the way!) of the greatest goalscorer in footballing history. Ronaldo’s senior career began in his native Portugal, with Sporting, where he made his senior debut at 17 years old against Inter Milan in a Champions League qualifying match. Despite his age, he registered 5 goals and 6 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. During his time at Sporting, Ronaldo drew interest from Manchester United after a 3-1 win against them in a friendly match. Reportedly, due to his individual performance against them, United’s players approached Sir Alex Ferguson after the game and implored him to sign the teenage Portuguese winger. In this period, Ronaldo demonstrated the trademark skills and flair that would soon become associated with his name. These moments set the foundational elements of his early playstyle, from which one of the greatest players of all time would be built. At the start of the 2003/04 season, less than a week after his impressive friendly performance, Ronaldo signed for Manchester United for £12 million making him the most expensive teenager in British football history at the time. Initially deployed as a winger, hugging the touchline and taking on defenders with ease, Ronaldo began to establish himself as one of the most exciting young talents in Europe. Towards the later stages of his initial stint with United, CR7 was increasingly given the freedom to roam from his position, often drifting inside and finishing more centrally. With the permission and ability to explore other areas of the field, he was able to find greater success in front of goal. This new role coupled with the refinement of his natural abilities culminated in his most successful and prolific season to date. During the 2007/08 season, Ronaldo scored 31 goals in 34 Premier league appearances (42 goals from 49 appearances in all competitions) winning a litany of individual awards in the process. These included the Premier League Golden Boot, European Golden Shoe and the 2008 Ballon d’Or. In terms of team success, he won both the Premier league and the Champions League, and as top scorer in both competitions guided Manchester United to the double. Overall during this part of his United career, Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances and won 9 trophies including 3 Premier League titles, 2 League Cups, 1 FA Cup and a Champions League. Through these achievements Ronaldo had firmly cemented himself as one of the greatest players in the world, and as such had attracted interest from abroad. After allegations by Manchester United of tampering from the previous season, Cristiano Ronaldo was signed for a then world-record fee of £80 million for the 2009/10 season. The marquee signing of this new era of Real Madrid, Ronaldo immediately established himself as the most prolific goalscorer in a star-studded side. Operating now as a left-sided forward, he finished the season with 33 goals in just 35 appearances in what would turn out to be his least prolific season for Los Blancos. However, Real Madrid finished the season trophyless after losing out to Barcelona for the league title and being knocked out of all other competitions. The following season, Ronaldo continued to establish himself as a goalscoring force, finishing with 53 goals in 54 games in all competitions. This included Ronaldo's first taste of silverware wearing the famed white of Real Madrid, winning the Copa del Rey. This taste, however, was bittersweet, with Madrid finishing second behind Barcelona again and being knocked out of the Champions League by them. Ronaldo's third season would prove to be different. Under José Mourinho, Real Madrid reached new heights, finishing the season on a record La Liga tally of 100 points (equalled by Barcelona the season after). This ended Barcelona's run of three consecutive league titles (and Madrid's three consecutive second-place finishes). The record points tally was achieved in large part through the success of their attacking players, with Ronaldo at the helm scoring a staggering 60 goals in 55 appearances. He became the first player in La Liga to score more than 40 league goals in consecutive seasons. However, the Champions League once again remained elusive. The 2012/13 season proved similar to previous seasons, with Ronaldo further establishing himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers of all time with 55 goals as many games. However, despite winning the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona, Madrid failed to win either the league title, Copa del Rey or Champions League. Despite consistent displays of world-class ability in both the league and Europe across these first few seasons at Real Madrid, the accompanying trophies commensurate with these performances remained limited. This, however, was about to change. The 2013/14 season marked the beginning of an extraordinary period of European dominance for Real Madrid. The arrival of Gareth Bale completed the formidable “BBC” attacking trio alongside Benzema and Cristiano. Ronaldo scored 51 goals in 47 appearances, including a record-breaking 17 Champions League goals, helping Madrid secure their long-awaited tenth European Cup, "La Décima", alongside the Copa del Rey. Over the following four seasons, Ronaldo continued his remarkable goalscoring form, reaching a career-best 61 goals in 54 appearances during 2014/15. He consistently finished among Europe's top goalscorers, winning the Pichichi Trophy and European Golden Shoe in 2014/15, while claiming the Champions League Golden Boot in all five seasons between 2013/14 and 2017/18. Ronaldo's performances were instrumental in Real Madrid winning three consecutive Champions League titles between 2015/16 and 2017/18, becoming the first team to achieve this feat in the modern competition. During this period, his role evolved from a left-sided inside-forward towards a more central, penalty-area-focused goalscorer. Madrid also secured the 2016/17 La Liga title, completing a league and European double. Across these five seasons, Ronaldo scored 249 goals in 239 appearances, helping Madrid win four Champions League titles, one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey and numerous international and domestic Super Cups. He also claimed four Ballon d'Or awards between 2013 and 2017, bringing his career total to five. By the time he departed for Juventus in 2018, Ronaldo had become Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer with 450 goals in 438 appearances. Following nine extraordinary seasons at Real Madrid, Ronaldo signed for Italian giants Juventus in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £99.2 million. At 33 years old, the move presented a distinctive new challenge in a third major European league, but Ronaldo quickly demonstrated that he still remained one of the world's most prolific goalscorers. Across his three seasons for Juventus, Ronaldo scored 20+ Serie A goals in every campaign, including an impressive 31 league goals in the 2019/20 season. His performances helped Juventus secure two successive Serie A titles in 2018/19 and 2019/20, alongside a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups. In 2020/21, Ronaldo finished as Serie A's leading goalscorer with 29 goals in 33 appearances, becoming the first player to win the top-flight scoring title in England, Spain and Italy respectively. Despite continued domestic success, the Champions League remained elusive, with Juventus failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals during Ronaldo's time at the club. Nevertheless, he finished his Juventus career with 101 goals in 134 appearances across all competitions, further demonstrating his remarkable consistency and adaptability before a return to Manchester United in 2021. In the summer of 2021, Cristiano Ronaldo made a sensational return to Manchester United, 12 years after his initial departure. Despite being 36 years old and returning to the Premier League, widely regarded as the toughest and most physically demanding league in the world, Ronaldo quickly demonstrated that his goalscoring ability still very much remained. During the 2021/22 season, Ronaldo scored 24 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions, including 18 Premier League goals in 30 appearances. This saw him finish as the league's third-highest goalscorer, surpassing established forwards such as Harry Kane, Sadio Mané and Jamie Vardy. His ability to perform on the biggest stage also remained apparent, scoring six goals in seven Champions League appearances, although United were eliminated in the Round of 16. Despite his individual success, United endured a disappointing campaign, finishing sixth in the Premier League without winning any silverware. The following season proved increasingly difficult, with Ronaldo struggling for playing time under new manager Erik ten Hag. Tensions between the two culminated in a controversial interview in which Ronaldo publicly criticised the club and its manager, before his contract was terminated by mutual agreement in November 2022. This brought a tumultuous and ultimately sour end to his celebrated Manchester United career. Making his senior international debut in 2003 at just 18 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo would go on to become the defining figure of Portuguese football for more than two decades. From an exciting young winger to the national team's captain and talisman, Ronaldo established himself as Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer, registering an extraordinary 146 goals in 234 appearances as of October 2026 (an international record). Ronaldo's greatest and most prominent international achievement came at Euro 2016, when he captained Portugal to their first major senior international trophy. Despite being forced off through injury during the final against France, his contributions throughout the tournament helped guide Portugal to a historic 1–0 victory. This triumph marked a defining moment in Portuguese football, cementing Ronaldo's legacy as the figurehead of the country's most successful generation ever. Portugal's success continued with UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025, with Ronaldo scoring in the latter final against Spain at the age of 40. These achievements, alongside his record-breaking international goalscoring and remarkable longevity, further established Ronaldo as the talismanic figure of Portuguese football, whose influence on the national team extended far beyond his individual performances. Following his departure from Manchester United, Ronaldo signed for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr in December 2022 on one of the most lucrative contracts in sporting history. His arrival marked a significant turning point for Saudi Arabian football, triggering a wave of high-profile signings including Karim Benzema, Neymar and Riyad Mahrez. Much like the Chinese Super League before it, Saudi Arabia emerged as a lucrative destination for established European stars, with Ronaldo becoming the figurehead of the league's growing international profile. Despite moving away from Europe's elite competitions, Ronaldo continued to demonstrate his remarkable goalscoring consistency. In the 2023/24 season, he scored a then-record 35 league goals, before retaining the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot with another 25 goals in 2024/25. Even after turning 40, Ronaldo continued to outperform many of the other high-profile arrivals in front of goal, demonstrating the longevity and adaptability that had defined his career. Across a career spanning more than two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has established himself as one of the most decorated and prolific footballers of all time. As of October 2026, Ronaldo has scored over 980 senior goals for club and country, including 450 goals for Real Madrid and 146 goals for Portugal. His remarkable achievements include five Ballon d'Or awards, four European Golden Shoes, five Champions League titles and seven domestic league titles across England, Spain and Italy. On the international stage, he captained Portugal to their first major trophy at Euro 2016, alongside two UEFA Nations League triumphs. Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of Ronaldo's career has been his ability to adapt and reinvent himself. From an explosive, skilful winger in his early years at Manchester United, to the devastating left-sided forward who dominated European football with Real Madrid, Ronaldo gradually transitioned into a more central, goalscoring role. His continued success at Juventus, during his return to Manchester United and into his forties at Al Nassr demonstrates the remarkable longevity of his career. With countless individual records, historic team achievements and some of football's most recognisable shirts associated with his name, Ronaldo's legacy extends far beyond his goalscoring statistics. From Sporting CP to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Portugal and Al Nassr, his career has spanned generations of football and cemented his position among the greatest players to ever play the game.CRISTIANO RONALDO
